About us

Founding Vision

Kenya Tropical Sea Life was founded in 2002 by Danish entrepreneur Rene Jorgensen with a visionary goal: to ethically supply the global aquarium trade while actively conserving marine biodiversity. Located in Mtwapa, along Kenya’s rich coastline, the company emerged as a leader in sustainable marine life export, fostering both environmental stewardship and economic opportunities for coastal communities.

From its inception, Kenya Tropical Sea Life focused on the responsible collection of ornamental marine species, leveraging traditional fishing knowledge alongside modern aquaculture techniques. The company pioneered net-caught fish collection methods to minimize environmental impact and worked closely with local fishermen, ensuring ethical harvesting and long-term economic benefits.

Innovation and Expansion

Recognizing the importance of sustainability, Kenya Tropical Sea Life expanded its focus from collection to cultivation. The company launched coral farming initiatives, becoming one of the first in Africa to propagate both hard and soft corals. This shift reduced reliance on wild reefs and laid the foundation for coral restoration projects along Kenya’s coastline.

A major milestone was achieved in 2021 when Kenya Tropical Sea Life was designated an Export Processing Zone (EPZ). This status enhanced the company’s global logistics, ensuring faster and more efficient deliveries while maintaining the highest international standards. Investments in advanced aquaculture systems and collaborations with organizations like the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KEMFRI) further strengthened the company’s role in marine research and conservation.
